Water Billing

All properties in the Town of Grimsby below the Niagara escarpment are billed for water services. Residential and commercial properties receive a bill every four months.

The Town of Grimsby offer its residents many options to pay their water bill.

Charges on your water bill

There are three charges that appear on your water bill – a fixed water charge, a variable water charge, and a variable wastewater charge:

  • The fixed charge pays for the cost of maintaining the water system
  • The variable charges are based on consumption and are determined by your water usage. (The Town subtracts your last reading from the current reading to calculate the amount of water usage for the billing cycle).

Water rates

The 2024 water and wastewater rates are effective March 1st, 2024:

Fixed water rate (Base Charge) is $112.05 every four months

Variable rates are unchanged for 2024.

  • Variable water rate $1.54 per m3 (1,000 L)
  • Variable wastewater rate  $1.23 per m3 (1,000 L)

Wastewater Billing – 2024 Updates

Funds collected through the wastewater budget are used to pay for sewage treatment costs, routine maintenance programs, and long-term capital rehabilitation and replacement programs. Prior to 2023, the Town’s wastewater collection system was fully funded as a wastewater levy on the property tax bill. In 2023 Council endorsed a billing methodology change to the way that the Town bills and collects required funds to sustain the Town’s wastewater system,   50% from the property tax bill and 50% on the water bill based on consumption.  Implementation of the new method was delayed for 2023 due to the timing of the 2023 budget approval. The split for 2023 was adjusted to 66.7% on the tax bill and 33.3% on the water bill.

In 2024, customers will be charged 50% of the cost from the property tax bill, with the remaining 50% based on water consumption on the water bill.  Customers will see a reduction on their wastewater tax levy portion of their tax bill based on this change.
