Elections
2022 Campaign Finances
Candidates are responsible for keeping records of their financial activities related to their campaign. They are required to keep all campaign financial records until Nov. 15, 2026 when the next council or school board takes office.
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996, outlines the penalties for not filing a financial statement. A candidate will automatically receive penalties if:
- they fail to file a financial statement by the end of the 30-day grace period or fail to apply for an extension by the filing deadline
- financial statements shows the spending limit was exceeded
- candidate fails to turn over to the Clerk any surplus when the financial statement is filed
Penalties are ineligibility to run for office or fill a vacancy until after the 2026 election, and if elected forfeit the office.
The Clerk is required to make a public report of candidates who filed financial statement and who did not. The Municipal Elections Act also requires that the Town make the Financial Statement available electronically.
