Special Documentary Film Presentation: Music of Survival - The Story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus
Wednesday May 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Grimsby Museum
Join us for special viewing of a documentary film entitled ‘Music of Survival – The Story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus’, produced and directed by Orest Sushko. Orest’s mother and grandparents, Paul and Emilia Stepowy were long-time Grimsby residents and together active participants in the local Ukrainian community. The film provides unique insight into Ukrainian history depicted through a fragile musical culture that has survived centuries. The bandura is Ukraine’s national musical instrument and a symbol of modern day survival of Ukrainian culture. The story depicts the harrowing journey of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, a group of 17 musicians who survived WWII as a musical ensemble and brought this musical tradition to North America in ensemble form. The evening will include a Ukrainian folk song performed by Orest on the bandura and his sister Oksana on vocals. The Sushko family will also be donating a bandura crafted by Paul Stepowy to the Grimsby Museum collections in honour of his Ukrainian heritage and Grimsby roots.
