Basement Flooding and Water Leaks Additional Info

With the recent heavy rainfall and reports of flooding, the Town of Grimsby would like to provide additional information for our residents:
  • Those experiencing basement flooding are advised to contact their insurance company to begin their claim as soon as possible
  • Safety first! – open windows to let in fresh air, keep children and pets out of the flooded area, wear protective gear, and if gas is detected, leave the house immediately and contact your gas company
  • Provide as much information as possible when reporting on basement flooding – where the water is coming from, when it started, how much water is present, and if the water has any colour or odour are key pieces of information
  • As drainage systems require time to fully drain after a heavy rainfall, we ask residents do not report full or flooding ditches unless an immediate risk is present to public safety - properties located near roadside ditches that remain full are asked to wait 24 hours after the storm has passed before reporting a full ditch to the Town
  • Standing surface water may take time drain as stormwater systems catch up to heavy rainfall, and the water will continue to drain as conditions improve
Residents are asked to refrain from reporting full or flooding ditches unless an immediate risk is present to public safety, and for residents with roadside properties to wait 24 hours after the storm has passed before reporting on full ditches to the Town.
We would like to once again thank residents for their patience during this time and urge everyone to stay safe.
