Four local centenarians recognized at Deer Park Villa as Grimsby marks 100 years

With the Town of Grimsby celebrating 100 years in 2022, Mayor Jeff Jordan and Town Staff stopped by Deer Park Villa and Suites to visit with four Centenarians and present a certificate recognizing their shared accomplishment with the community.

Jack Holness (100), Helen Hore (100), Florence Rutten (100), and Kay Davies (103) were in great spirits in their Grimsby 100 t-shirts as they received their certificates alongside family and residents at Deer Park Villa. Following the presentation, Deer Park Villa staff had decorated the facility with Happy Birthday decorations, cake, and Grimsby 100 cookies for all to enjoy.

Many residents at Deer Park Villa have lived their whole lives in Grimsby and have great stories to share about local History. A few of the stories shared are below:

“My husband’s father and grandfather M. Cosby lived on a little farm on Kemp Rd. West. They were hired by the North Grimsby Township to help build Woolverton Mountain Road. A man and a team of horses worked for $1.75 a day” (circa 1892-1895).

“I remember taking the train from Montreal Quebec to Grimsby. It took all day to get here. I arrived just in time for my 21^st Birthday. Our first home was on Pinewood Ave. and we used to go skating near the cemetery.
