Emergency Preparedness Week is May 7 - 13, 2023

Emergency Managers from all 12 municipalities in Niagara and the Niagara Region, proudly launch an emergency preparedness short film this year in celebration of Emergency Preparedness Week.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness campaign that has taken place every year, during the first full week of May, since 1996. It is an opportunity to educate the community about steps individuals can take to prepare for an emergency.  The short film highlights 3 different types of hazards that residents of Niagara could be faced with and demonstrates the importance of being prepared in advance to stay safe.

We would like to thank our sponsors Canadian Tire, Enbridge, Freshco, Niagara Regional Fire Chief’s Association and Niagara Region Emergency Management for their support in public safety and emergency preparedness.

Please take a few moments to view the GET PREPARED NIAGARA video and start preparing you and your family by following the steps below.

  1. Make a plan: Include actions that will help yourself and your family stay safe before, during and after an emergency event.
  2. Build a kit: Gather supplies that will prepare you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency.
  3. Stay informed: Follow local authorities for up-to-date information and instructions.  Be sure to include a portable, battery-operated radio in your emergency kit.

Throughout this week, municipalities across Niagara will share important information about potential hazards and encourage individuals and families to take action to better prepare themselves for all emergencies.  Please visit a Canadian Tire and Freshco store near you in Niagara as they further promote essential items for your emergency kit and start to build your kit today.

“At Enbridge Gas we take a proactive approach to identifying and preventing safety issues, and make it a priority to support safety education,” said Nick Klip, Hamilton Regional Manager, Enbridge Gas. “Programs like Emergency Preparedness Week are committed to making people in this community safer each and every day and we’re proud to support the work of the municipalities in the Niagara Region”

“The health and safety of our communities is very important to us. As an essential service provider, Freshco offers many of the non-perishable products necessary for an emergency kit,” said Paul Cirasolo FreshCo (Ontario and Carlton).  “We hope that our support of this initiative will encourage everyone in Niagara to prepare for all emergencies.”

“We are very excited to partner with our sponsors to develop and share this emergency preparedness educational film for the residents of Niagara.  When we are prepared as individuals, it helps make our community safer and more resilient.” Cathy McGrath, Emergency Management Coordinator, Niagara West Emergency Management
