West Niagara Renewables Celebrates Official Opening in Grimsby
The Town of Grimsby was pleased to join Walker in celebrating the official opening of West Niagara Renewables, a renewable energy and organics processing facility located in Grimsby.
The 33-acre facility features approximately 517,000 square feet of processing infrastructure and currently processes approximately 30,000 tonnes of organic material annually, converting it into renewable electricity and nutrient-rich soil amendments for local Niagara farms.
The facility is approved to process up to 159,000 tonnes of organic material annually, positioning it to become one of Ontario’s largest anaerobic digestion facilities. At full capacity, the facility could generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 6,000 homes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 48,900 tonnes annually.
The project is also contributing to the local and regional economy, with five to seven new jobs expected to be created while supporting approximately 140 direct jobs, 84 indirect jobs and 65 induced jobs.
Proudly Canadian-owned and headquartered in Niagara, Walker is a fifth-generation family-owned company that has provided essential infrastructure and environmental services in Ontario for more than 139 years. Today, the company employs more than 1,200 people and recovers more than one million tonnes of resources annually, producing compost, renewable natural gas, renewable electricity, engineered soils, sustainable fertilizers and alternative low-carbon fuels.
The official opening included a ribbon cutting with Mayor Jeff Jordan, Members of Council, Town staff, Walker employees, community leaders and special guests, followed by a tour of the facility. The tour provided an opportunity to learn more about how innovative organics processing and renewable energy production are helping to support a more sustainable future.
