Town Staff Build Tree and Plant Identification Skills with NPCA

Town of Grimsby staff recently took their learning outdoors as part of a tree and plant identification workshop led by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA).

Staff from the Town’s Public Works, Operations and Parks & Facilities teams participated in the full-day session, which focused on four key areas: tree identification, plant identification, tree health and the use of the iNaturalist app to document field observations.

Following classroom learning and presentations, staff put their new knowledge into practice during a two-hour field tour at Southward Park.

The training provided staff with practical tools to help identify tree-health concerns, invasive species and hazardous plants, including noxious or poisonous species. Earlier and more accurate identification can help support appropriate control measures, safer work practices and consistent maintenance decisions.

The knowledge gained through the workshop will also support future tree and vegetation inspections, condition assessments, maintenance planning and planting decisions throughout the community. The session is part of the Town’s ongoing staff development and environmental stewardship efforts and provided another opportunity to strengthen collaboration with the NPCA.

By building knowledge and expertise among staff working directly in Grimsby’s parks and public spaces, the Town can continue to support a healthy urban forest and well-maintained outdoor spaces for the community.
