The Downtown Reimagined Weekly Dispatch – October 30, 2026

Current Work

Both construction crews worked overnight at the Main Street and Christie Street intersection this week. Despite encountering buried trolley tracks and additional Bell infrastructure, crews advanced to Forty Mile Creek and are now heading up Christie Street.

Watermain commissioning is now underway, with swabbing carried out Thursday night. Swabbing is the first step in cleaning newly installed watermains, using large sponges pushed through the pipes with water to remove debris and sediment.

Looking Ahead – Week of November 2

Night Closure: Main Street and Christie Street Intersection

Starting Sunday, November 1, at 8:00 p.m., the night crew will continue installing hydrants and services in the intersection. The intersection will be closed nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., reopening every morning at 6:00 a.m. Cars must follow the designated night closure detour, and heavy trucks travelling between Mountain Road and the QEW must follow the regional truck detour.

Watermain Installation: Christie Street, North of Main Street

Starting Monday, November 2, at 6:00 a.m., the day crew will install the final stretch of watermain north on Christie Street, up to the dead end of Elizabeth Street past the parking lot entrance. Please follow posted signage and traffic control.

Full Closure Continues: Mountain Street (Elm Street to Main Street)

Mountain Street remains fully closed to through traffic, with the same detour in place. Once the Christie Street watermain is complete, crews will install the remaining sanitary laterals in this section. Cars must follow the designated car detour, shown as the purple route on the local traffic plan, and posted detour signage. Heavy trucks travelling between Mountain Road and the QEW must follow the regional truck detour.

Watermain Commissioning

Commissioning activities, including pressure testing, disinfection and water quality testing, will continue next week.
