Rabies & Microchipping Clinic Coming to Grimsby
The Humane Society of Greater Niagara is making it easier for pet owners to protect their animals and their community, by offering a low-cost Rabies Vaccination and Microchipping Clinic in Grimsby this spring.
Why rabies vaccination matters
Rabies is a serious zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans. Under Ontario law, all dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies. The disease is almost always fatal once contracted, making prevention critical.
Even pets living in urban areas or indoors are still at risk. Wildlife such as bats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, skunks, and other animals commonly found in both rural and urban settings can carry rabies. In particular, bats can enter homes, putting indoor cats at risk.
Rabies is most commonly transmitted through a bite from an infected animal, and even a single exposure can lead to infection.
When can pets be vaccinated?
Rabies vaccines can be safely administered to healthy dogs and cats once they reach 16 weeks of age.
The importance of microchipping
Microchipping is a simple, safe, and permanent way to identify your pet. About the size of a grain of rice, a microchip is implanted just under the skin and contains a unique identification number.
If a lost pet is found, veterinary clinics and shelters can scan the microchip to access the owner’s contact information through a secure database - greatly increasing the chances of a quick reunion.
While collars and tags are still recommended, they can be lost or removed. A microchip provides a reliable backup form of identification.
