Mayor Jordan’s statement on heavy rainfall events

Over the past weeks, Grimsby experienced significant rainfall that required a coordinated municipal response. Our focus remains on addressing the needs of our community while recognizing the broader regional impacts. For those residents dealing with flooded basements, damaged belongings and impacts from flooding, we appreciate the frustration and impacts that this has had.

I have met with senior Town staff to review how we are responding to the flooding issues and to determine what additional assistance we can provide. Public Works crews are continuing their work in addressing any storm-related issues as they are reported throughout our community.

Our team has worked with the Niagara Region and community partners for enhanced services starting Monday on a temporary basis:

  • increase curbside collection limits
  • bulk item pick up and tip fee exemption for the NR 12 landfill site (West Lincoln)

It has been asked why the Town of Grimsby did not declare an emergency. While Grimsby residents have certainly been impacted by the heavy rains and flooding, the staff team and emergency services have been able to respond to the impacts of the flooding with existing resources and without the need for a formal declaration. Council and staff continue to monitor the situation and take these matters seriously with a focused effort on responding to resident inquiries and concerns as they are received. Declaring an emergency does not provide the Town with any additional powers, funding or resources beyond those already available.

I want to thank our staff team and our emergency crews for their response throughout these recent rainfall events. I would also like to thank our community, for helping each other out during these challenges times.

If you would like to discuss your concerns and impacts further I welcome you to contact me directly at jjordan@grimsby.ca or 905-979-0662.
