Growing a Greener Future: Grimsby hosts workshop on strengthening the Urban Tree Canopy
The Town of Grimsby recently hosted residents and partners to a workshop focused on growing and strengthening our urban tree canopy. This important session brought together experts, community members, and environmental leaders to explore how we can all contribute to successful, sustainable tree planting in our community – from understanding soil health to selecting the right species.
Featured speakers included Jason Henry from the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, sharing insights on soil preparation and land readiness, and Stuart McPherson from the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), who discussed native species selection and the importance of planting the right tree in the right place.
According to the 2024 Niagara Region Tree and Forest Canopy Report, Grimsby’s overall tree canopy cover is 24%, with just 17% in urban areas. This highlights the need for community collaboration and strategic planting to expand the benefits of an accessible and resilient urban forest.
