February is Black History Month
February is Black History Month and the 2026 theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” invites us to celebrate the lasting contributions, creativity, and leadership of Black Canadians — past, present, and future.
Throughout February, the Town of Grimsby encourages residents to take time to learn, reflect, and engage with the rich history and achievements of Black communities, including those within Niagara.
Black History Month highlights in Grimsby include:
- Grimsby Public Art Gallery (GPAG):
GPAG will be spotlighting the work of Larry Wilson, a Black Canadian artist from Montreal, on its social media channels. Wilson is known for his imaginative, fantastical landscapes that blend memory, place, and emotion. Featured works include Self-Portrait (1975) and an Untitled Painting (1973). - Grimsby Public Library:
The Library will be featuring two Black History Month book displays, highlighting stories of freedom, courage, and the powerful contributions of Black communities.

This month is an opportunity to honour Black excellence, deepen our understanding of shared history, and continue meaningful conversations about inclusion and equity - not just in February, but all year long.
We invite the community to join us in celebrating Black History Month and learning more about the stories that help shape who we are today.
