Extreme Cold & Winter Storm Expected
The Town of Grimsby is preparing for a significant winter storm and prolonged period of extreme cold, starting today with bitterly cold conditions beginning this evening, and continuing through Saturday night. Conditions will be reassessed on Sunday morning, at which time the alert may be extended or lifted.
Weather Conditions
- Temperatures below -15°C, wind chills between -30°C to -33°C
- 20–30 cm of snowfall anticipated
- Heavy and blowing snow may result in reduced visibility and hazardous travel
Winter Operations & Parking Restrictions
- Town crews will be actively carrying out winter operations to clear snow and ice from roads and sidewalks.
- No parking is permitted on Town roads during snow removal operations, in accordance with Town of Grimsby By-law No. 16-82 (Section 2.14.01.13). Keeping vehicles off the road helps crews work safely and efficiently and allows emergency vehicles to pass.
Cold Weather & Regional Service Impacts
- When temperatures fall below -10°C, Niagara Region activates a Winter Weather Advisory, adding extra emergency shelter beds
- Niagara Transit provides free transportation to warming centres in the region, along with any Town of Grimsby designated warming spaces
- The Town of Grimsby provides warming spaces in designated public facilities during regular business hours
If You Must Travel
- Allow extra time
- Drive according to conditions and ensure you have an emergency vehicle kit
