Downtown Reimagined Project Update – September 4, 2026

Night work at the Main Street and Elm Street intersection wraps up this weekend, and the Downtown Reimagined project then shifts east along Main Street East.

Current Work

Crews have made significant progress at the Main Street and Elm Street intersection this week, working overnight since Monday. Due to Wednesday's storms, work at the intersection continues tonight, Friday, September 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and is expected to wrap Saturday morning; roads will reopen and remain accessible. Once this remaining work is complete, the primary installations within the intersection will be finished, aside from final connections to the existing watermain and private properties, which will take place once the new watermain has been tested and put into service. Crews will then shift east along Main Street toward Kingsway Boulevard.

Looking Ahead (Week of September 7)

There will be no construction on Monday, September 7, for the Labour Day holiday. Beginning Tuesday, September 8, crews will return to daytime hours and begin watermain installation on Main Street East between Elm Street and Kingsway Boulevard, continuing toward Robinson Street North. Work in the Balsam Lane Public Parking Lot will also resume Tuesday, September 8, and is expected to be completed by the end of the day. Once crews reach Robinson Street North, the contractor will move directly into watermain work on Rossmore Avenue, moved up from later in the project since equipment and materials are already in the area.

Traffic Impacts

Beginning Tuesday, September 8, Main Street East through the work zone will be open to one-way eastbound traffic toward Beamsville. Local traffic and access to businesses will be maintained in both directions outside the active work zone. Westbound travel toward downtown will be restricted beyond Kingsway Boulevard to start the week, and as crews move east it will be restricted to Robinson Street. Signed detour routes will guide through traffic around the work zone. A temporary full road closure will be required at the Rossmore Avenue and Main Street intersection when construction reaches that area.
