Downtown Reimagined Project Update — June 5, 2026

This week’s update brings exciting progress across the project, including key milestones from our construction team, the introduction of our refreshed brand identity, and new ways for you to stay informed and connected during construction.

Construction Contract Awarded

We’ve officially reached another important milestone on the path to ground-breaking. The Town has awarded the construction contract for Phase 1 of the Downtown Reimagined project.

We’re pleased to announce that the contract has been awarded to Alfred Beam Excavating Ltd, a firm with extensive experience delivering projects of similar size and scope.

This phase of work includes:

  • Replacement of the downtown watermain and water services
  • Replacement of sanitary laterals on Mountain Street from Elm Street to Main Street West

Construction for Phase 1 is scheduled to run from Summer 2026 through Fall 2026.

Pre-Construction Coordination

The project team, Town staff, and inspectors met with the contractor on June 1 for a pre-construction coordination meeting to finalize equipment staging, site logistics, and communication protocols before work officially begins.

On-the-Ground Community Support

Supporting residents and businesses throughout construction remains a top priority.

To help ensure strong communication in the field, the contractor will provide a dedicated Project Ambassador during Phase 1. The ambassador will complete specialized onboarding and training and will be equipped with project information, FAQs, and support materials to assist business owners, residents, and visitors once construction begins on June 22.

Construction Notice Issued

A formal Start of Construction Notice has been issued to residents and businesses on the affected streets: Main Street East, Main Street West, Elm Street, Mountain Street, Christie Street, and Rossmore Avenue.

Here's what's coming up:

  • Week of June 22: Contractor mobilizes, erecting signage, staging equipment, and setting up a site office
  • First week of July: Construction begins

During construction, you can expect dusty/dirty roads, traffic lane reductions, and overnight full closures for some work periods. There may also be intermittent driveway restrictions and temporary water supply disruptions. We will be providing additional details about the construction (location of work, traffic impacts, detours, etc.) before the work begins, and will continue these notifications as the project commences.

Pre-Construction Action Item

If you have underground irrigation or sprinkler heads near the road allowance, please mark them / notify the project team by emailing DTreimagined@grimsby.ca ahead of time. This helps the crew avoid damage to your system.

Free Pre-Condition Survey — Book Now

Before construction begins, dBA Services Inc., a third-party consultant hired by the contractor, will conduct free pre-condition surveys of properties in the work area. This is a photographic inspection that documents your property's existing condition and protects you if any damage claim arises later.

Booking dates: Wednesday, June 10 and Monday, June 15 – spots fill fast!

To book, call or text (905) 383-9491, toll free (833) 212-4858, or email pcs@dbaservices.ca (office is open Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm).

Participation is voluntary but strongly encouraged. Exterior-only inspections don't require you to be present — just your permission. There is no cost to participate.

What to Expect During Phase 1

Because the first phase of construction focuses primarily on underground infrastructure improvements, including watermain and sanitary service renewal, you may not immediately see major visual changes above-ground.

While much of the work happening this summer will take place below the surface, it represents critical long-term infrastructure investment for downtown Grimsby.

NEXT STEPS

We understand that a project of this scale will bring temporary adjustments to daily routines, and we are committed to making the process as smooth and predictable as possible for everyone who lives, works, shops, and visits downtown.

Thank you for your continued patience, partnership, and support as we invest in the future of downtown Grimsby.
