Celebrate Earth Day in Grimsby
Earth Day is a time to reflect on the importance of protecting our environment and to recognize the collective actions – big and small that help build a more sustainable future. The Town of Grimsby is proud to continue advancing initiatives that support a healthier, greener community for all.
This year, the Grimsby & District Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Grimsby are teaming up for an Earth Day Community Cleanup on April 25. Volunteers from both clubs will work together to help clean up Casablanca Waterfront Park and the parks surrounding Forty Mile Creek. Initiatives like this highlight the power of community collaboration and the meaningful impact of caring for our shared spaces.
Looking ahead, residents are invited to take part in the Town’s annual Tree Giveaway, held during Community Safety Day on May 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Southward Park (84 Mud St. W).
- 150 smaller stock trees (2x5" plugs or 1-gallon containers) will be available on a first come, first served basis.
- Residents who pre-registered for larger stock trees (2 or 3-gallon containers) can pick up their trees at the event.
Planting trees is one of the many ways our community contributes to environmental sustainability, helping to improve air quality, support biodiversity, and enhance green spaces.
As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, the Town has also completed its first Annual Green Initiatives Report – an important milestone in tracking progress on climate and environmental actions. The report highlights sustainability efforts across municipal departments and celebrates partnerships with community groups, conservation authorities, and other organizations.

In addition, the Town has been awarded funding to develop an Invasive Phragmites Removal and Management Plan, including a pilot site to test best management practices. This work will help protect local ecosystems and preserve natural habitats. A phragmite (more accurately called Phragmites australis) is a tall, fast-growing grass that thrives in wetlands like marshes, ditches, and along shorelines. More details to come!
