The Grimsby Author Series was originally conceived by the Grimsby Public Library Board out of a desire to help fundraise for the new local Library/Art Gallery that was under construction, and to promote reading and literacy in the community. It began in the fall of 2002 under the name of "The Pumphouse Author Series" because for the first two seasons, the readings were held at the old Grimsby Pumphouse on the shores of Lake Ontario.
Ticket demand made a larger venue necessary, so the Series then moved to the 140 - seat theatre/auditorium at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School for the next three seasons. As it became more and more popular, the Series soon outgrew this location as well, and was moved once again to it's present location at the Casablanca Winery Inn in 2007. As of the 2016-17 season there has been more than 20,000 people who have attended our events over the years, with nearly 150 Canadian author appearances.
Through the amazing growth spurt we experienced in the first 15 years, the aim of the Series has naturally grown and transformed from just a Library fundraising effort to a national stage where authors from all over Canada come to gain visibility and promote Canadian literature. We are so proud of the efforts of all the volunteers, sponsors, and organizers that have helped to make the Grimsby Author Series the huge success it has become today.
What can you expect from Grimsby Author Series?
The Grimsby Author Series (GAS) happens over several months starting in the fall and ending at the beginning of spring the following year. The main events of the season take place at the Casablanca Winery Inn, while extra events are usually added each season that take place at the Grimsby Public Library.
A regular season features a series of six events, with each one usually featuring two authors. Each author reads from or speaks about their latest work for about twenty minutes, and this is followed by a question-and-answer period with the audience. Local wines and light refreshments are served before the talks begin, and the evenings conclude with door prize draws, a chance to purchase a copy of the featured titles, and a book signing by the authors.
Ticket packages cost $120.00 for a full series pass (6 events), and half-series passes will also be available this season for $60.00/each (These will include either the first 3 events in the fall, or last 3 events in the winter). Single ticket sales will only be possible if tickets remain available as the reading approaches.
The extra events added each season are called 'At the Library' events and they are hosted at the library throughout the season with tickets being sold separately from the packages described above.
Door Prize Draws
Each evening of the Grimsby Author Series ends with several door prize draws. Most door prizes are donated by very generous sponsors and usually include items like gift certificates, gift baskets, and/or tickets to various Niagara/Hamilton concerts and performances. We also give away copies of the evening's featured titles (3 of each).
All audience members are automatically entered for a chance to win our door prize draws with the purchase of their tickets to that particular event of the Series. You must be present at the event to win. Good luck!
