The Grimsby Public Library has the following services for patrons who have trouble reading due to visual impairment:

Centre for Equitable Library Access

The Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) provides patrons who have trouble reading print due to visual, physical or learning disabilities with books in accessible formats. You can use your library card to access over 200,000 items from their collection.

Register for CELA

You can register for CELA online if you are a Grimsby Public Library member. Please visit or call us at 905-945-5142 if you need help with registration. If you do not have a library card, staff can register you for one at the Library. Go to Library Membership to learn more about getting a card.

How to get CELA items

CELA's system can select books for you, or you can choose your own books. Once you have picked your titles, you can access the materials in the following ways:

  • Download books to your computer or mobile device, such as an iPhone.
  • Download books to a DAISY player over a wireless connection without using a computer.
  • Receive audio CDs, Braille or described movies by mail direct to your home.

Types of items CELA provides

The CELA collection includes items in all genres for different ages and interests including:

  • Books and magazines in audio, e-text and Braille
  • Newspapers in e-text
  • Described videos
  • Children's picture books with Braille added (print braille)

Large print and audiobook collections

We have a collection of fiction and non-fiction books in large print and audiobook for those with poor or limited vision. Search the Search the Library catalogue to find large print titles. Call, email or visit us to ask about this collection.

Visually accessible computer station

We have a customized Internet workstation to better serve those who have visual impairments or simply struggle with reading small print. This station has been equipped with Zoom Text magnifier software and a large print, high contrast keyboard.
