The Library has eliminated overdue fines!

Fees for lost and damaged materials will continue to apply. Borrowing privileges will be suspended for accounts with items that are 60 days overdue. Privileges will be reinstated once overdue items have been returned or replacement costs have been paid.

How to avoid overdue items

Click on the tips below to learn how you can avoid overdue items:

 Sign up for email/text notification
Email notification is a borrowing service that sends you pre-overdue notices via email/text. This gives you a friendly reminder the day before your items are due back to return them. You will also receive notices if the item does become overdue, and when an item you put on hold comes in for you.
Keep your due dates in mind
Hold on to your checkout receipt, call the library to ask, or check My GPL Account to keep track of your due date and return your items before or on that day.
Use the 24/7 drop box to returns items
The outside Library drop box on the west side of the building off the Carnegie Street entrance is always open. If you know you will not be able to return your items on the day they are due, you can return them the day before, even if we are closed.
Renew your items before the due date
If you know you will not be able to return your items on time, renew your items before the due date to extend your loan period. You can call, visit in-person, or renew items through your My GPL Account. This will only work if no other patrons have put those items on hold. You can renew up to 2 times.

Borrowing services

We offer the following services to make borrowing and using our collections easier:

Email or text notices for items

Ask to get email or text notifications by calling or visiting us, or by signing up through My GPL Account. You will get the following notices via email/text:

  • Hold notices: when an item you had on hold is available for pick up
  • Pre-overdue notices: the day before an item is due back
  • Overdue notices: receive these two weeks and four weeks after an item is overdue.
  • Other notices related to your account only (no spam)

Why you should get email/text notification

Email/text notification helps you avoid missing your holds and accruing overdue items on your account. We do not send spam or any other messages that are unrelated to your holds or borrowed items.

Place holds

Get on the waiting list for books, DVDs, magazines, or most other library items by placing a hold. You can place a hold in-person, by phone or online through My GPL Account. This can be done if the item you want is checked out by someone else or if it is otherwise temporarily unavailable. To learn how, go to Place a hold.

Renew loan periods

You can extend your due date if you need more time with your item. Please note the following restrictions:

  • Each item may be renewed up to 2 times
  • Each renewal period is the same as the original loan period
  • You may renew over the phone, in person or by logging onto My GPL Account
  • Items cannot be renewed if the item has been requested by another patron
