Grimsby Fire Department fights property insurance rates

Grimsby Fire Department fights fires and property insurance rates with new designation

Grimsby, ON – July 4, 2018 – The Grimsby Fire Department recently completed substantial testing from the Fire Underwriters Survey to earn their Accredited Superior Tanker Shuttle Service designation. This designation ensures the fire department can continuously provide water supplies in excess of the minimum required for hydrant municipal-type water, even in areas without water service.

Earning this designation also means that residential property owners in Grimsby who do not currently have municipal water service may be eligible for improved property insurance rates due to the fire department’s enhanced fire protection rating. The testing agency, Fire Underwriter Survey, is responsible for publishing the Canadian Fire Insurance Grading Index which is used by insurance companies to set rates.

Town of Grimsby council made a number of capital investments that were vital in helping to secure this designation. These investments include the purchase of a second fire tanker and the installation of hydrants on Sobey Road and Park Road.

Since 2013, the Grimsby Fire Department has had formal Fire Protection Agreements with Lincoln and West Lincoln to provide integrated services. These agreements played an important role in attaining the designation by providing a means to automatically and simultaneously deploy additional tanker support to reported fires.

Presently, this accreditation only applies to personal lines insurance in Grimsby. The fire department is currently working towards the commercial designation.

Residents interested in learning more about their property insurance rates should contact their home insurance provider.

“This designation represents years of hard work from the talented men and women of the Grimsby Fire Department, as well as the commitment of this term of council to make the investments needed in our community to keep everyone safe. The potential reduction in home insurance is also a welcome benefit that makes our town a more competitive place to live. I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to everyone involved in making this success happen.”

  • Mayor, Bob Bentley

“On behalf of the entire Grimsby Fire Department, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to earning this significant designation. We would not have been successful without both Council’s support of numerous capital infrastructure projects over the past several years, the hard work of everyone at the GFD and our fire protection partners in Lincoln and West Lincoln. I’m proud of what we have accomplished, and I look forward to working towards our successful completion of the commercial designation program.”
