The Media Lab is Grimsby's innovation and technology hub. It allows people of all ages and all walks of life to use a variety of cutting edge software & hardware to make all kinds of creative and wonderful things. The only limit is your own imagination, and staff are here to help you get started bringing your ideas to life. Explore the page below and discover what we have to offer.

Media Lab Location:

Find the Media Lab right in the heart of the the library next to the Fireplace Lounge. You'll see two large desks with all kinds of tech goodies for you to tinker with!

The Grimsby Public Library's Media Lab has all kinds of cool digital equipment and hardware to help you create masterpieces and preserve memories.

Philips 4 Head DVD/VCR

Have a bunch of old family movies you'd like to digitize? Videotapes can deteriorate over time. Your old videos will have color bleed, white specks, and other distortions. Don't risk this happening to your home video. Use our DVD/VCR & the Honestech VHS to DVD 7.0 Deluxe software to to transfer your old cassette tapes to DVD.

MakerBot Replicator 2: 3D Printer

This great Library resource allows you to print your very own 3D objects using an eco-friendly, corn-based, biodegradable plastic filament that comes in all kinds of crazy colours. The 3D printer works by heating up the filament and extruding it through a mechanism that builds the object in layers. This service is (as of now) totally FREE and anyone can come in and try it – sweet deal!

Reservations will not be taken for the 3D printer. Patrons can use it on first-come-first-serve service.

 Getting started:

Create your own objects using any kind 3D modeling software program (like SketchUp – which we have here at the Library) or peruse Thingiverse and download a pre-made design (must be an .stl file). Transfer your file to the Makerbot software program on the Media Lab computer to resize and start printing. If it’s your first time our staff are always ready and willing to help you get started, just ask at the Library Service desk.

Curious about the possibilities offered by 3D Printing Technology? We’re now offering free 15 minute 3D printing tutorials for the library’s Makerbot Replicator II 3D printer. No experience necessary! Please book in advance by clicking here or calling 905-945-5142.
