 Summer Reading Clubs

The GPL has lots of summer fun for kids 2 - 12 years old. It takes just minutes to share a bit about the story they've read or heard with staff, get a small prize for each book, and enter our weekly raffle.

Summer Reading Clubs are drop-in activities where kids can see friends, share great books, and try activities like our Puppet Theatre, Magformers, or Mystery box. These clubs help reduce summer literacy loss too! Click on the buttons below to learn more about them.

We'd like to thank our wonderful Summer Reading Club Sponsors - Without you these wonderful summer literacy programs would not be possible!
This program is made available thanks to funding from Young Canada Works.

The Library's one-on-one READ program continues to grow in popularity as more families learn about this opportunity for free literacy support. Using games, paired reading, and other activities, our Summer Literacy Coordinator will help kids entering grades 2 - 6 maintain reading levels during a one week session. Each session is 45 minutes in length.

Even better, children registered with READ can use the books they've read as part of the TD Summer Reading Club! Registration begins Monday, June 6 so please download the registration form below and bring it with you for fast & easy sign up.

These colourful, sturdy, plastic shapes that you build with are perfect for kids interested in building and constructing.  There are squares, triangles, pentagons, and even some motorized parts. You can get all sorts of shapes and sizes, but here’s the best part: they’re magnetic!  They snap together allowing your kids to learn how the shapes fit together to make a sturdy structure.

How it works:

The 8 elementary schools located in Grimsby are invited to play each yearEach participating school will select a team of 6 players ranging between Grades 3 and 6 (maximum of 2 students per grade). Each school gets an information package that includes: the competition rules, the list of books being used in the competition, a toolkit to help teachers prepare for the event, a list of sample questions, a letter explaining the competition to parents, and a Grimsby Public Library card application.

All players will recieve a small prize and a certificate for participating, and each school will get 6 paperback books which they can incorporate into their school's library or hand out to their players. The school with the highest score at the end of the competition gets a Scholastics Publishing gift card, and their school's name engraved on the Battle of the Books Official Plaque to display at their school until the following year.

There's lots to do at the Libray and just as much fun on the Library's website. We've got lots of great online tools and have collected them in one spot...  just for kids.  You'll need your GPL card number to access some of these great online tools, and some anyone can use. There's lots of info for parents too.
